Environmental and Recycling Practices

Recycling involves more than just collecting corrugated containers and paper. When done right, it addresses a wide range of environmental and recycling-related issues. Walsh Bros. is aware of this and has made an environmental commitment to handle packing materials, paper, metal, styrofoam, plastic and other industry-related materials in a responsible way. Our goal is to establish and maintain professional environmental practices and reduce landfill waste as much as possible.

Our environmental and recycling commitment includes the management of recyclable packing and shipping materials for products we deliver to customers’ job sites. Our installation and delivery teams collect and remove packaging and shipping materials from job sites. We place these materials back in our delivery trucks, and return them to our recycling bins at our warehouse locations where they are sorted and made ready for periodic recycling pickup.

In addition to our own recycling program, Walsh Bros. partners with manufacturers who also make a strong commitment to reduce landfill waste and have established environment-friendly practices and procedures within their own companies. An important part of these programs is the selection of products the manufacturers use to carton, pack, and ship products to Walsh Bros. Many of our regional and national suppliers have also made strong efforts to meet special requirements when it comes to recycling old corrugated containers and other recovered packaging paper through an ongoing practice of saving usable material from landfills.

Walsh Bros. also recycles customers’ excess or damaged office furnishings though our Mid-Market Pre-Owned Furniture Sales division, which is the state’s largest used office furniture program for free-standing office furnishings. You can view our Phoenix Warehouse Clearance Center inventory online at www.walshbros.com/clearance_center.html

In addition, we buy customers’ used furniture and also rent and lease office furniture, which we pick up, repair or refurbish, and display for resale. When a furniture product has reached the end of its productive life, we dispose of these pieces of furniture through a recycling partner that separates the components that can be reused. Our FACS Records Center currently manages more than 156,000 boxes of paper records in storage and we have a sophisticated records destruction program that follows rigid national guidelines for the proper environmental and security handling of these paper materials. Weyerhaeuser is also eager to accept our boxes of destruction documents—those paper records our customers no longer want or need but which can be reused for other purposes. Every large enterprise keeps vast quantities of documents that can be separated, shredded, and reused.

Our recycling partners have a built-in need for post-consumer recovered paper. As such, we can put our customers’ shredded and baled documents to immediate reuse and avoid the costs and possible security issues of multiple handling. Our customers receive a certificate of destruction for their records. This is another way Walsh Bros. makes an important contribution to resource conservation in our environment.
